So a few days ago Trump made the outrageous decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, an accord that was created to combat and manage climate change.
I, as well as many other Americans, am upset that he chose to make this decision. I’m not even going to get into how real the issue of global warming is because the world around us can speak for itself (just ask the rising seas and increasing global temperature). Click Here for evidence of global warming if you’re interested in learning more.
So what can we do to prevent climate change? If our president doesn’t want to take action against global warming, what can the 321 million people living in the US do?
Luckily, there is a cause of a global warming we can take individual action against.
Here are some facts if you don’t believe me:
Animal Agriculture is responsible for 18% of GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS which is more than the combined exhaust from ALL TRANSPORTATION
Livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32,000 MILLION tons of Carbon Dioxide every year, or 51% of ALL WORLDWIDE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS
Livestock is responsible for 65% of ALL HUMAN RELATED EMISSIONS of Nitrous Oxide- a Greenhouse that stays in our atmosphere for 150 YEARS
Emissions are projected to increase 80% by 2050
Cows produce 150 BILLION GALLONS of Methane PER DAY. Methane is can be almost 100 times as destructive as CO₂
These statistics are outrageous and only getting more so with time. But we CAN make a change, every single one of us. Whether it be trading in the usual burger for a veggie burger or ordering some potatoes instead of steak, we can all decrease our footprint on global warming in some way.
I’m not saying you have to go vegetarian or vegan over night, so don’t run away just yet. I’m just offering that you make little changes here and there and at least consider the cost of the food on your plate.
Click Here for some good veggie recipes if you’d like to try it out for a week, a day, or even just a meal. Brands like Gardein (my personal favorite), Beyond Meat, Boca Burger, and Trader Joe’s veggie meats are some good and tasty alternatives.
